Choose the Right Broadband Service for Your Business

When choosing a broadband service for your business its important to make sure it has the required performance and capacity. With most business applications now being delivered via the internet, lack of speed or bandwidth can mean decreased productivity and not being able to take advantage of new age technology. Not to mention the on-going frustration.

Things to Consider Before Choosing a Broadband Service

  • What cloud based applications will your business use? These may range from accounting software to Office 365. The bigger the list, the more bandwidth is required. Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transmitted at one time.
  • Are you planning to store your business files in the cloud? Take into account the type and number of files that you may upload and download through applications such as One Drive and Drop Box.
  • How many staff does your business have? The reality is that apart from using business applications, staff members will also use the service for some personal use. And that has to be taken into account.
  • Do you upload a lot of files, especially videos and graphics? Businesses that have an online store, manage their website in-house, or do regular online back-ups will have a higher requirement for upload speeds.
  • Are you likely to migrate your phone line services to Business VoIP? If you're planning to use your broadband service for both voice and data, then sufficient bandwidth is paramount to ensure 100% quality.

Quick Terminology Guide

  • Bandwidth - the amount of data that can be transmitted at one time.
  • Upload Speed - the speed at which data can be sent.
  • Download Speed - the speed at which data can be received.
  • Data Allowance - the amount of data that can be transmitted as part of the broadband plan.
  • Shaping - reducing the bandwidth of the service i.e. slowing it down when data allowance has been exceeded.
  • Contention - relates to the number of users that are able to share a broadband service. A 20:1 contention means that up to 20 users are able to share a connection at any given time. 1:1 contention means there are no other users able to share the broadband service.
  • Latency - the amount of time a packet of data takes to traverse the broadband network to its destination.
  • Jitter - fluctuations in latency or speed with which a packet of data is transmitted.
  • Packet Loss - the amount of data packets that are lost in transmission.
  • NBN CVC - the Connectivity Virtual Circuit is the amount of network capacity that can be shared among end-users.
  • Modem - allows you to connect to the internet.

  • WiFi Router - same as router but it also allows you to connect your devices wirelessly.
  • Network Switch - enables a hardwired connection of multiple devices to one network and therefore one broadband service. An 8 port switch allows for 7 devices plus the router to create one network.
  • ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line
  • SHDSL - Symmetrical High Speed Digital Subscriber Line
  • MBE - Mid Band Ethernet
  • EFM - Ethernet First Mile
